The term Internet of Things (IoT) is everywhere, but what does it really mean?

The IoT is made up of the following four things:

Things (sensors, microcontrollers, actuators, appliances, automobiles, etc.)
Connectivity (how the devices transmit and receive their information, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc.)
Software (what gives the things the ability to ‘think’ and act, which is usually not seen by the user)
Application (the part that gives the user control)
